Drepung monastery
located at the west part of lhasa city,it is 5 km distance from lhasa city,the monastery was built by Jayangchje (the disciple of the Tsongkapa) in 1416,and it is cover the total area 250.000sq.m,In which once lived 10.000 monks,the fifth Dalai Lama lived here before he moved to Potala palace,the monastery has a large collection of historical relics and buddhist scriptures, and the monastery is a biggest monastery of the Gelukpa sect(yellow hat school) in Tibet, the Shoton festival is held yearly in the 8th month,is the most hilarious occasion in the Drepung monastery,the display of the great appliqué Thanka in the open air is held in the monastery,which is one of the biggest religious activities in Tibet .
